The evolution of travel medicine as a unique specialty owes its origins to the marked increase in global travel for tourism, business, education, family reunification and migration, and the health risks posed by these population movements. Travel medicine has moved beyond its formative years to a well-accepted subspecialty of medicine. Through the 2nd edition of this textbook we have had a unique opportunity to meet the hands-on needs of travel medicine practitioners, both for the novice as well as the more experienced ones. We have chosen to write this textbook with a unique purpose in mind. The book goes far beyond merely supplementing courses of instruction in school or postgraduate training, or serving as a reference book. It is a “how to” book which can be read from beginning to end as a complete course in travel medicine.
It is the job of the travel medicine practitioner to conduct an individualized risk assessment, educate the traveler about the risks, and then counsel the traveler regarding prevention of illness and injuries. Also, travelers may receive advice about the self-treatment of a variety of ailments. Limited post-travel triage information is included in this book for those providers who care for return travelers. The purpose of triage is to ensure that the ill returned traveler is referred, when necessary, for immediate evaluation to avoid a potentially life-threatening situation or serious public health risk that may be unrecognized by an inexperienced practitioner.
This text provides a diverse approach to the presentation of material by wide ranging educational methodologies including figures, algorithms, photographs, sample tools and other graphics. The book distinguishes itself by its high quality artwork that supplements and amplifies learning. Additionally, each chapter contains a list of key points that summarize the most important issues discussed within the chapter. Finally, this thoroughly updated 2nd edition comes with access to the complete contents online, fully searchable - enabling the reader to consult it rapidly from any computer with an Internet connection. Therefore, it is hoped that the well-designed practical approach taken by the authors will make this second edition an essential resource that the travel health provider will keep close at hand whether through the print edition or through on-line access.
