Another five years has flown by and more than enough has happened in the world of dermatology to warrant this, the fourth, edition of Clinical Dermatology.
This best selling text has been completely revised and refreshed in the fourth edition. The authors aim to enthuse family doctors (for whom they are primarily writing) to enjoy the challenge of diagnosing and treating skin conditions.
Clinical Dermatology contains over 500 high quality pictures and diagrams matched with many colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it teaches. It has established a reputation as a ‘way of learning’ and as a cogent overview of the subject for the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the maze that too often lies between the presenting skin complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The authors have created an easily read text with enough detail to clarify the subject but not enough to obscure it.
This fourth edition contains new chapters on racially pigmented skin, dermatology of different age groups and cosmetic dermatology. Relevant internet sites are now clearly highlighted at the end of each chapter and the comprehensive formulary has been updated.
Three new chapters have been introduced into this edition. That on racial skin differences reflects the cosmopolitan world in which we live and should make interpretation of skin disorders in different ethnic groups easier. In chapter 15 is about the skin conditions encountered in different age groups, and add two more to Shakespeare’s seven ages – those of the foetus and the pregnant woman. The third newcomer is that on cosmetic dermatology. This chapter will allow family doctors to keep one step ahead of their patients who, aided by a myriad of TV programmes, seem to know much about keeping ten years younger.
Every chapter have been also updated on its own merit and have tried to include important recent advances. The role of the new ‘biologicals’ in the treatment of psoriasis and their side effects, fillagrin gene mutations in atopic eczema, recently recognized drug eruptions, the science behind the different types of phototherapy and new lasers, the prevention of and protection against infections after dermatological surgery, are but a few.
