An instructor and the Clinical Coordinator for the Surgical Technology Program at Pearl River Community College, she has more than 16 years of experience in education, and is active with the Association of Surgical Technologists. Ms. Allhoff's professional experience includes being part of the first open heart team in Hattiesburg, and a C.S.T., C.F.A. for general, thoracic, and vascular surgeons. She later specialized in peripheral vascular surgery and worked as a Certified First Assistant. Ms. Allhoff holds an Associate's Degree in Applied Science and co-authored "Surgical Instruments" with Debbie Hinton.
  • Debbie Hinton is a Certified Surgical Technologist specializing in orthopedic and neurological procedures. She is currently an instructor and the Program Director for the Surgical Technology Program at Pearl River Community College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Shermak: Body Contouring (McGraw-Hill Plastic Surgery Atlas Series)

Breast and body-contouring surgery, discussed in the literature for hundreds of years, has increasingly evolved over time. While new techniques are hardly ever actually new (once an intensive literature search is done), we do see change, whether it be the addition of a new suspension suture or a combination of techniques that were not combined before. This field has applications across a broad swath of the population, from the petite “mommy” looking for a makeover to the male who lost more than 100 lb after gastric bypass surgery. There are many techniques to cover, and we aim to include an excellent representation.

This atlas is directed to residents preparing for surgical cases and to seasoned plastic surgeons hoping to innovate or refresh their current surgical repertoire. We cover the scope of breast surgery, including reduction, augmentation, lifting, and gynecomastia; arm and thigh contouring with liposuction and excisional techniques; abdominoplasty, upper and lower, with hernia repair techniques; and back contouring. Monnier: Pediatric Airway Surgery: Management of Laryngotracheal Stenosis in Infants and Children

Paediatric Airway Surgery is the fruit of experience gained over many years to improve the surgical outcome for children suffering from a variety of compromised airways. It focuses on the technical aspects of diagnosis and treatment to provide the reader not only with well-established treatment modalities, but also with new concepts of paediatric airway management. Some ideas may not be shared by all, but should stimulate new thoughts in search of better solutions in the future.

This endeavour was induced by numerous foreign colleagues who visited the Lausanne ENT Department to study endoscopic and open surgical airway techniques, particularly cricotracheal resection and its variants.

This book is also intended to provide insights into controversial issues pertaining to the most difficult airway reconstructions. The author does not claim to present definite solutions to the challenging problem of the compromised paediatric airway. Nonetheless his modest goal, based on the experience of pioneers, is to add a stone to the pyramid of knowledge in this field of research. With inputs from different horizons, it is hoped that this will one day lead to the full rehabilitation of most tracheostomized children suffering from various forms of laryngotracheal stenosis.

Illouz: Adipose Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine

In the last decades, investments in basic research have yielded extensive knowledge about the many and complex processes involved in the development of an organism. Since human pluripotent stem cells were first isolated, research on stem cells has received much public attention, both because of its extraordinary promise and because of relevant legal and ethical issues. Regenerative medicine is classified into cell therapy that does not require a scaffold and tissue engineering that requires a scaffold and bioactive substances such as growth factors; though both need adult stem cells. On November 2008, during a meeting of Yves-Gérard Illouz and Aris Sterodimas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the idea to write a book focusing on adipose stem cells and their role in regenerative medicine was born. Foreword
It has been said that man is entering a new era of discoveries, the truly first revolution since the discovery and harnessing of fire. In a word: biotechnology. This vast and growing field of knowledge presents to us, on a daily basis, inventions that only a few years ago would have seemed to be taken out of a story by Jules Verne. The correlated sciences that surround biotechnology stretch from engineering to computers, from biology to nanotechnology. As physicians, we are challenged with new concepts and terminology that already are part of our lexicon. It is in this spirit that my fellow plastic surgeons, Drs. Illouz and Sterodimas, present to the medical reader the book Adipose Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Illouz is recognized as a pioneer in liposuction, and it is natural that, with his curious mind, he follows his interest in adipose tissues, immersing into the everexpanding discipline of cell culture and derivation. The promise of perpetuating and renovating whole tissues is leading us into a new era of medical practice, called regenerative medicine. Together with Dr. Sterodimas, a younger colleague, recently graduated from our school, Dr. Illouz stimulates our intellect, opening new vistas to an unknown future.

Arle: Essential Neuromodulation

The field of Functional Neurosurgery and Neuromodulation is experiencing a renaissance. The reasons for this are many. First, numerous patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders continue to be disabled despite the best available medical treatments. Second, there have been important advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders. Third, there have been significant improvements in both structural and functional brain imaging, which make the identification of potential targets easier. Fourth, there have been significant improvements in the neurosurgical techniques, such as neuronavigation and microelectrode recording, as well as in the equipment, including the stimulating electrodes, the pulse generators, and the drug delivery pumps, that are being used in day-to-day treatment.

There are a large number of circuits in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that are amenable to neuromodulation. Both constant electrical stimulation as well as responsive electrical stimulation are possible, in addition to modulation through the delivery of pharmacological agents. As this field evolves, we anticipate the further development and application of novel forms of modulation based upon techniques such as optogenetics and gene therapy, with the latter currently being evaluated in a number of trials in Parkinson's disease. In addition, there is some re-emerging activity in transplantation as an investigational therapy.

The types of pathologies that are being treated with neuromodulation include pain, movement disorders, psychiatric disease, and epilepsy, and the patients that could benefit from these therapies are many. The future is bright for this specialty, and we need to train young neurosurgeons to embark on this fascinating aspect of neurosurgery.

This book compiles a series of works by experts who discuss various aspects of this field. It provides an overview of the entire discipline, tells us where we have been, and also where we are heading.

Book Review
There are many books in print addressing surgery in the periocular region, but this second edition of Oculoplastic Surgery is a must for all readers that want a refreshing and comprehensive approach to these surgical procedures. Brian Leatherbarrow brings a different perspective due to his combined training in England with Mr. Richard Collin and in the United States with Dr. Jeffrey Nerad and myself. During my time with Brian, I noted that he always approached patients in an organized manner based on facial and periorbital anatomical relationships. I have adopted some of his approaches, which have improved the surgical care of patients in my practice. Brian combines the best of his training and shares his 20 years of surgical practice in this book.
This second edition continues the practical approach to the diagnosis and management of a variety of oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal challenges. Brian shares his experience through the complete and anatomically-based descriptions of surgical procedures that have brought satisfactory results to his patients over the years. The chapters are comprehensive with regard to clinical presentations, patient selection, surgical indications, technical aspects of procedures, salient features for successful procedures, and potential complications. His narrative is exquisitely accented with both illustrations and numerous color photos of procedures and patients. Each chapter ends with suggested reading for further investigation. This approach provides an engaging presentation for the interested reader and a concise method of teaching that guides you to successful surgical procedures. This book adds to our understanding of the treatment of patients with oculoplastic conditions.
I congratulate Brian for undertaking the enormous task of a second edition to an already excellent textbook. There are ample improvements in this edition that will satisfy readers from any field with an interest in the area of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery.
