Anniko: Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (European Manual of Medicine Series)

The European Manual of Medicine was founded on the idea of offering residents as well as specialized clinicians the latest and most up-to-date information on diagnosis and treatment in Europe. In contrast to existing textbooks, the European Manual of Medicine aims to find a consensus on the demands of modern European medicine based on the “logbooks” recommended by the Union of European Medical Societies (UEMS).
Despite some regional differences there is a vast consensus among the European nations as to what should be included in the training programmes for residents in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. These programmes are promoted by national institutions, such as Academies, Medical Schools at the Universities and national Societies. However, the duration of these training programmes continues to differ depending on the country.
For this reason, the ORL-section of the Union of European Medical Societies (UEMS) has proposed that each trainee should have a log-book registering his/her training progress. The log-book also offers guidelines for standard training, in an attempt to achieve a homogeneous level of resident training programmes all over Europe. More recently, the UEMS ORL-section has created the European Board Examination (EBE) in ORL-HNS.
This 3rd issue of the European Manual Series has been written for residents in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, with the aim of providing the most recent information on our discipline. The section on each organ contains concise chapters on clinical anatomy and physiology, the principles of clinical examination, technical diagnostic procedures and imaging. For each disease definition, the aetiology, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, complications, conservative and surgical treatment are described, as well as elements of differential diagnosis. The philosophy underlying this new edition is to supply all the relevant information in a clear, concise style. References are limited, and there are a few suggested readings.
This book will provide residents with a comprehensive tool helping them to prepare for the board examination at national or international (EBE) level, and finally to provide our patients with the best quality care.
