Adler: A Pocket Manual of Differential Diagnosis 5th Edition

In the practice of clinical medicine, physicians encounter a variety of symptoms, signs, and laboratory tests. Each clinical finding and test result is associated with a differential diagnosis—that is, a list of conditions or disease entities that may produce the given finding or result. Differential diagnoses for various clinical findings are available but are often scattered in a number of different references. Our book contains information gathered from many such sources, compiled in a compact, easily accessible form. It serves both as a convenient guide in the workup of clinical problems as well as a valuable teaching tool. Intended for medical students, physician assistants, house officers, and clinicians, this book helps make the process of medical diagnosis more efficient and comprehensive. It does not, however, serve as a substitute for the thoughtful, skillful integration of data obtained by careful history taking, physical examination, and judicious use of laboratory tests by each and every practitioner.
A Pocket Manual of Differential Diagnosis, Fifth Edition, has been thoroughly reviewed and updated. Each day brings new and exciting discoveries in medical science: new diagnostic tests for diseases, new methods of treatment, new pharmaceuticals, as well as the discovery of new side effects. An expanded section has been devoted to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection covering new manifestations of HIV infection, including immune reconstitution syndrome. The infectious disease chapter has been revised, reflecting its importance in clinical medicine, the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, and the unfortunate threat of bioterrorism. This chapter contains a comprehensive review of bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens and their manifestations in both the primary care and health care settings. In fact, the advancement of discovery often outpaces the ability of this text to effectively keep up in some areas. Due to the rapid advancement of pharmaceuticals, the section on drugs has been deleted from this text in deference to publications that are updated annually.
The text is divided into 12 chapters, ten of which are organized by organ system. The remaining two chapters discuss acid-base and electrolyte disorders, as well as infectious diseases. Each chapter contains multiple entries, representing symptoms, clinical signs, laboratory tests, radiologic findings, and disease processes. The differential diagnosis for each entry is listed, with the more common disease entities generally being listed first. Where possible, disease entities are organized by their pathophysiologic mechanisms. At the end of each entry, references are listed. These cover both general and subspecialty texts. A bibliography of general and subspecialty texts is also included at the end of each chapter.
