Ratcliffe: Family Medicine Obstetrics 3rd Edition

The past decade has seen major changes in the provision of maternity care to women in the United States. The most striking change has been the rapidly escalating rate of cesarean section intervention that has seen the national cesarean section rate climb from 20.7% in 1996 to 30% in 2006. With the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System and To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, the emphasis on improving communication and medical team function in maternity care has grown immensely. During the past 5 years, Family Medicine has been actively involved in reinventing itself with the Future of Family Medicine Project. This ambitious project has affirmed the essential role that family physicians play in the provision of maternity care for women in the United States.
This edition remains anchored in the philosophy of providing woman- and family-centered care. Although much of the content of the third edition remains the same, there are greater depth and to produce summary recommendations based on level A evidence at the end of most sections.
