This book is about the structure and function of normal mammalian, mainly human, cells and tissues. The major tool in the study of histology is the microscope and students will find a brief description of how microscopes work aimed at the absolute novice in Appendix 1 at the back of this book. Various staining procedures are used to prepare tissues to make them visible through the microscope and these are described in Appendix 2. The student is strongly urged to read these appendices first; it really will make all that follows much more comprehensible. Appendix 3 is a glossary of common histological terms and like the other appendices can be dipped into at any time.
