Iacobuzio: Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology: A Volume in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology Series (Expert Consult Series)

The practice of anatomic pathology, and of gastrointestinal pathology in particular, has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past decade. In addition to the multitude of diseases, syndromes, and clinical entities encountered in clinical practice every day, the increasing integration of molecular biology with gastrointestinal pathology is occurring at a fast pace, from large academic centers to community-based practices. Thus, the ability to feel current with the ever-expanding practice of pathology can be daunting. This challenge may be particularly overwhelming for residents just beginning their careers in the field of pathology, or any clinician attempting to remain informed about gastrointestinal pathology. For this reason, we are particularly pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the second edition of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology prepared for the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series. The information this book provides will be a valuable resource for all those interested in gastrointestinal pathology.
Although numerous excellent textbooks regarding the pathology and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are available, we are especially proud of this edition for its novel format. First, the majority of images presented are new, and original material was prepared by the authors solely for this publication. Second, the format for each chapter follows a template to ensure ease of use, standardization of information presented, and completeness of each chapter. Finally, the many authors who contributed to this text were asked to participate based on their reputations as outstanding teachers and clinician educators. To all, we are deeply grateful.
Christine A. Iacobuzio-Donahue, Elizabeth Montgomery

Foreword
The study and practice of anatomic pathology are both exciting and overwhelming. Surgical pathology, with all of the subspecialties it encompasses, and cytopathology have become increasingly complex and sophisticated, particularly with the incorporation of molecular pathology. It is simply not possible for any single individual to master all of the skills and knowledge required to perform these tasks at the highest level. Simply being able to make a correct diagnosis is challenging enough, but the standard of care has far surpassed merely providing a diagnosis. Pathologists are now asked to provide large amounts of ancillary information, both diagnostic and prognostic, often on small amounts of tissue, a task that can be daunting even to the most experienced surgical pathologist.
Although large general surgical pathology textbooks are useful resources, by necessity they could not possibly cover many of the aspects that pathologists need to know and include in their diagnostic reports. As such, the concept behind the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series was born. Given the success of the first series, we welcome the opportunity to update and improve all of the editions for the second series. Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology is designed to cover the major areas of surgical and cytopathology, and each edition is focused on one major topic. The goal of every book in this series is to provide the essential information that any pathologist, whether general or subspecialized, in training or in practice, would find useful in the evaluation of virtually any type of specimen encountered.
I am pleased that Drs. Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue and Elizabeth Montgomery agreed to edit this second edition of their book. Both of these individuals are superb gastrointestinal pathologists from Johns Hopkins Hospital, and they have edited an outstanding, state-of-the-art book on gastrointestinal pathology, which cuts to the essentials of what all pathologists want and need to know about diseases of the tubular gut, biliary tree, pancreas, and liver. The list of contributors is, as in the first edition, most impressive and includes nationally and internationally renowned pathologists who excel in their areas of expertise. The content in each chapter is practical, well organized, and well written, focusing on the thorough evaluation of biopsy and resection specimens and culminating in an accurate diagnosis using traditional morphology supported by immunohistochemical and molecular genetic techniques.
This edition of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology is organized in 21 chapters covering all of the major problems encountered in gastrointestinal pathology. There are separate chapters that describe the non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, and anus. Superb separate chapters on mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, infectious diseases of the colon, idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, other inflammatory or iatrogenic colitides, and polyps and polyposis syndromes allow for the necessary depth to cover these broad topics. In addition, pathology of the gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts, and pancreas are covered in separate chapters, each of which provides the essential information and nuances of the organ that is covered. The last four chapters of the book cover metabolic and toxic conditions of the liver, inflammatory and infectious diseases of the liver, liver neoplasms, and gastrointestinal lymphomas. I know of no other book in the literature that covers all of these aspects of gastrointestinal pathology in such a concise manner. Moreover, many of the photomicrographs are new to this edition.
I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to Drs. Iacobuzio-Donahue and Montgomery, as well as all of the authors who contributed to this outstanding edition in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series. As I was confident in the first edition series, I am completely confident that future editions in this series will be as thorough and as well done as their predecessors. I sincerely hope you enjoy this volume in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series.
