The establishment of professional guilds between 1100 and 1500 led to setting standards for training and assessment. National standards measure the quality of training and examinations. In 2005, when the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB) was set up, as one of its early tasks the Board produced standards of assessment. All medical Royal Colleges had to comply with these standards. All examinations had to meet these criteria. Consequently, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, in line with other medical Royal Colleges, modified its assessment systems, introducing Work Place Based Assessments. The MRCPsych examination was also modified radically. Among the changes was the introduction of CASC (Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies) component at the old level of MRCPsych Part II examination. This also replaced OSCEs and the uncertainty of seeing a long case under examination conditions. CASC assesses competencies and skills in a structured way so that as far as possible like is compared with like.
