Welcome to the new and improved 11th edition of the The Hospital for Sick Children Handbook of Pediatrics! The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, affectionately known as “SickKids,” was established in 1875 and has become one of the top pediatric academic health science centers in the world, with an international reputation for excellence in health care, research, and education. The first 10 editions of the Handbook have set a high standard, which we hope that we have not only continued but also built upon to produce this 11th edition.
We know that the reader needs succinct, easily accessible, and evidence-based answers to the problems we all see regularly in pediatrics. Our goal in this edition of the Handbook is to provide practical, algorithmic, and system-based approaches to a wide range of pediatric diagnoses and scenarios. Every chapter has been extensively revised to reflect up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to pediatric clinical problems, using evidence-based guidelines wherever possible. A wide range of topics spanning primary to quaternary care pediatric medicine have been included, making this handbook an important reference for medical students and residents, practicing pediatricians, family doctors, emergency department physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary practitioners providing care to children.
We have reorganized and revised all urgent and emergent clinical scenarios, creating a new section on Acute Care covering key pediatric emergencies (e.g., anaphylaxis, status epilepticus, and status asthmaticus) and relocating this important section to the front of the Handbook for easy reference. Updated comprehensive chapters include Resuscitation, Emergency Medicine, Pain and Sedation, Poisonings and Toxicology, Anesthesia, and Procedures. We have also made readily accessible the key information for urgent situations, including all new Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) algorithms, as well as new topics like substance abuse, psychiatric emergencies, and the acute presentation of eating disorders. Common resuscitation drugs and useful calculations have been incorporated inside the front and back covers for rapid access.
In this edition of the Handbook, you will find several new chapters: Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology, with practical approaches to ordering and interpreting imaging in key scenarios; Immunoprophylaxis, with comprehensive information on vaccinations and chemoprophylaxis; and Child Maltreatment, with vital points for the recognition and management of these difficult situations. Throughout the Handbook we have added all important normal reference values, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, ECG parameters, and body mass index, for the spectrum of ages and sizes making up the pediatric patient population.

For more than 50 years now, The Hospital for Sick Children Handbook of Pediatrics has been a mainstay quick-reference text for Canadian, American, and international medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as other health care professionals involved in the day-to-day care of neonates, infants, children, and youth. In the past, the handbook could be seen bulging out of the pockets of white coats all over The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) as well as other hospitals. In more recent times, as the white coat is being steadily phased out, the handbook is now seen attached to clipboards, kept in diagnostic bags, and even chained to desktops on wards and outpatient units.
The major purpose of The Hospital for Sick Children Handbook of Pediatrics, 11th edition, is to provide “frontline” pediatric health care providers with the essential, up-to-date information required to meet the needs of the individual child and family in their care: assistance in making the diagnosis, ordering the appropriate tests, and developing the appropriate management strategy for both acute and chronic disorders of childhood. The development of the handbook was the result of the close collaboration between the residents or fellows and the staff pediatricians or pediatric subspecialists in SickKids who wrote the various chapters. The 11th edition has a state-of-the-art approach to pediatrics based on the knowledge and experience of pediatricians from one of the largest and best-known freestanding children's hospitals in the world (www.sickkids.ca).
Each year, SickKids cares for over 50,000 children and youth in its Emergency Department; more that 13,000 admissions are made to the in-patient services; and over 175,000 make ambulatory care visits. These children present with a wide range of childhood disorders—from the common to the exceedingly rare, and from the simple to the inordinately complex.
The 11th edition of The Hospital for Sick Children Handbook of Pediatrics is the direct result of the dedication, skills, and leadership of its five Chief Editors—two of them faculty members and three trainees. Our enormous thanks are extended to them for producing such an outstanding edition, as well as to all of their section authors, both faculty and trainees. Soon work will begin on the 12th edition!
