Shah: NMS Medicine Casebook (National Medical Series for Independent Study)

As a third-year medical student, I found a problem-based approach the most effective and efficient method to prepare for the wards and the National Board of Medical Examiners shelf examinations. Despite the plethora of review books available, there lacked an interactive yet comprehensive resource to prepare for the internal medicine clerkship. Available casebooks lacked the depth to serve as a primary source for learning. On the other hand, comprehensive texts and review books were written in a format that did not simulate real-life patient encounters or shelf and board exam questions.

The NMS Medicine Casebook covers all the information necessary to excel on the medicine clerkship in an interactive, case-based format. Although no text can cover all of internal medicine, this book is intended to serve as a comprehensive source for shelf exam review. The text emphasizes “next steps in management” and includes case variations to distinguish between similarly presenting conditions. The conversational approach along with numerous algorithms, tables, mnemonics, and images facilitate rapid accumulation of large amounts of information in the short span of the clerkship.

The depth and format of the book is also ideally suited to prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 CK and USMLE Step 3 examinations. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants may find this text helpful early in their careers. Clinician educators can use the cases in this book as tools for instruction during pathophysiology courses and the medicine clerkship.

To those of you beginning your medicine clerkship, I wish you the best of luck. I hope this book can help you get the most out of your rotations and ace the shelf!
