The most rapid and long lasting way to learn is by engaging all the senses, especially by incorporating visual information. This is most clearly the case when one is trying to learn a medical procedure. For this reason, we have developed video tutorials to help achieve rapid competence in these procedures.
Additionally, repeated review of cognitive, visual, and manual skills can allow a learner to master and retain a procedure. For those in the medical field who need to use these procedures episodically, returning to these video tutorials will refresh and reinforce previous instruction.
It is increasingly recognized that standardization of procedures can lead to improved safety. We hope that learners will apply these standard methods as shown in the video and text so that we can offer procedures to our patients that are safe and produce the desired outcome.
As medical educators, we have found that by using these video tutorials we achieve learning efficiency that was not possible with only pictures and text. We have used these videos to teach and test competency in medical procedures.
