OMalley Breast Pathology 2nd Edition Expert (Consult Series)

In the 4 years since the publication of the first edition of this book an explosion in our understanding of the molecular genetics of breast cancer has occurred. This has been accelerated by the advent of genomic technologies following the sequencing of the human genome. In this second edition, for which we are delighted to act as editors, we have added a new chapter that describes the major genomic approaches used today. The authors also discuss how these technologies are predicted to change the way we understand and treat breast cancer. Throughout the remainder of the text we have maintained the original format and comprehensive approach of the first edition, but have updated many chapters. For example, a section on handling specimens postneoadjuvant therapy has been added to Chapter 2, and discussions on multigene prognostic assays, including Oncotype DX and MammaPrint, have been included in Chapter 20. An in-depth discussion of the updated seventh edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging of breast cancer, with a focus on handling and reporting sentinel lymph nodes, is included in Chapters 22 and 23, and Chapter 24. Chapter 22 Chapter 23 Chapter24 on breast cancer biomarkers includes a detailed discussion on external quality assurance, an important topic for all laboratories that perform these tests.

We are again indebted to the many internationally renowned breast pathologists and clinical and scientific experts from around the world who have contributed to this book, and we are sincerely grateful for the time and effort they have put forth. We are delighted to share their words of wisdom with you, our readers, and we hope that you find this book a useful resource in your practice of breast pathology.

Book Reviews
Drs. Frances O’Malley, Sarah Pinder, and Anna Marie Mulligan, world-renowned breast pathologists from Canada and the United Kingdom, have edited an outstanding, state-of-the-art book on breast pathology. The list of contributors is impressive, and includes eminent pathologists from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, all of whom have built national and international reputations in the field of breast pathology. The content in each chapter is practical, well-organized, and concisely written, focusing on the thorough evaluation of fine needle aspirates, core biopsies, wire localization biopsies, and resection specimens. Overviews of the clinical and radiologic aspects of breast diseases provide a thoughtful background for the practicing pathologist, since these aspects go hand in hand with the histologic features.
This edition is organized into 28 chapters covering all the major problems encountered in breast pathology. Several new chapters in this second edition provide the most up-to-date information on the histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic aspects of breast diseases. Separate chapters describe the normal breast, inflammatory conditions, sclerosing lesions of the breast, papillary lesions, fibroadenomas and phyllodes tumors, stromal lesions, diseases of the nipple, and fibrocystic changes. Chapters 14 through 20Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18 Chapter 19 Chapter 20 are dedicated to the ductal and lobular proliferations of the breast, describing in great detail the subtle changes that occur in the spectrum from hyperplasia to atypical hyperplasia to in-situ and invasive carcinoma. Separate chapters are dedicated to familial breast cancer, the handling and evaluation of sentinel lymph nodes, immunohistochemical diagnosis of breast lesions, and molecular markers in invasive breast cancer.
I wish to extend my sincerest gratitude to Drs. O’Malley, Pinder, and Mulligan for editing a superb edition of Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology. I would also like to congratulate all the authors who contributed to this outstanding edition. I sincerely hope you enjoy this volume of the series.
