Carranza's Clinical Periodontology eleventh edition is the definitive international reference text in periodontics. Edited by Drs. Michael G. Newman, Henry H. Takei, Perry R. Klokkevold, and editor emeritus Fermin A. Carranza, the eleventh edition provides high-quality information for students, residents and practitioners.
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to one of the most exciting and meaningful editions of Clinical Periodontology (CP11). The eleventh edition is truly transformational. It fully engages modern information technology while maintaining and refining its 50 years of education excellence. CP11 improves on the previous edition standard-bearer periodontal textbook by more accurately reflecting the essential core information of periodontology as well as the state-of-the-art methods in both the science and clinical knowledgebase. Contributors from more countries than ever before refelect a unifying view of the basic information related to the science and technology of modern periodontics.
CP11 is one of the first books in dentistry to migrate to a new blended learning combination print and electronic platform: information anytime and anywhere it is needed. An important distinction from the previous edition is that the size of the core printed book is reduced and is accompanied by its online companion, a full-featured electronic book called Expert Consult E-dition. The CP11 E-dition will be MUCH improved over the current online version from the previous edition in every aspect, including better speed, quality, functionality, access, linking and more animations, videos, case reports, and one of the most comprehensive image libraries on periodontal pathology ever assembled.
The CP11 core printed book is a complete and thorough presentation of periodontology essentials while retaining the style and quality that make Carranza's Clinical Periodontology the number one periodontal textbook in the world. Advances in printing and digital technology will make CP11 even more “readable” than the previous edition. The entire Table of Contents is presented with variation in font color that allows readers to recognize all subject headings in the entire edition for both the printed and online content. Supplemental material added after the print edition is published will also be added to the online platform with indicators that it is new content.CP11 print and online versions will be sold together as a complete set. No separate print only or online only versions will be available.

Preface
This eleventh edition is the most comprehensive textbook and information resource about periodontology available anywhere. Using Elsevier's advanced technology and high standards of quality, the international team of editors and contributors have developed a major periodontal resource intended to be used by everyone with an interest in periodontology.
Our goal in completely revising this classic textbook was to preserve the same tradition of comprehensiveness and organization that has made the book the number one choice among educators, students, clinicians, researchers, and policy makers. And, for the first time, the book will become part of Elsevier's Expert Consult series in medicine and dentistry.
Since publication of the first edition of this book 58 years ago, periodontology has made tremendous progress. Analysis of periodontal tissues and elucidation of the mechanisms and causes of disease have extended far beyond histology and physiology and into the realm of cellular and molecular biological understanding.
New therapeutic goals and clinical techniques, based on an improved understanding of disease, have facilitated better outcomes and brought us closer to achieving the ultimate goal of optimal periodontal health and function. Today, reconstruction and regeneration of lost periodontal structures, replacement of compromised teeth with implants, and creation of esthetic results are integral parts of clinical practice. This book is written for all individuals—from students to educators, clinicians to researchers, and specialists to generalists. It is our belief that periodontal care of the public is primarily the role of general dentists and dental hygienists. The responsibility to examine, diagnose, and either treat or refer all periodontal problems is unquestionable. Likewise, the role of periodontitis in systemic disease makes diagnosis essential and treatment imperative.
The multifaceted, complex task of producing the eleventh edition required the collaboration of numerous experts from various fields, and their contributions are invaluable. We know that this new edition will continue to be as useful to dentists, hygienists, periodontists, students, educators, and researchers as the previous editions and that it will contribute to continuous progress of our profession.
