Postma: Atlas of Transnasal Esophagoscopy

Transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE) has significantly altered the clinical practices of endoscopists from various disciplines. In just a short time, it has transformed the way clinicians evaluate the esophagus and it has been the stimulus for dozens of hands-on courses each year, teaching otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, and laparoscopic surgeons how to perform TNE and how to incorporate it into their offices.
Atlas of Transnasal Esophagoscopy is a concise yet comprehensive review of TNE, and it is our hope that this work will assist both novice and experienced examiners in understanding esophageal disease and the various uses of TNE. Determining which patients will benefit from TNE is a key question, and so we begin with four indications. We then describe the technique of TNE and provide a review of nasal, laryngopharyngeal, and endoscopic esophageal anatomy.
next six chapters are devoted to various types of esophageal pathology including, but not limited to, various causes of esophagitis, webs and rings, hiatal hernias, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal neoplasia. Each area of pathology will briefly note treatment options to assist the physician in determining the need for immediate therapy or further specialist consultation.
Finally, this exciting technology enables the endoscopist to perform a number of other in-office procedures. These procedures are reviewed and references are provided for detailed descriptions.
This atlas will serve as a valuable resource for otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, general and laparoscopic surgeons, as well as others interested in esophagoscopy at any level of training and experience. I would encourage the readers of this atlas to contact any of the authors to discuss clinical dilemmas involving their patients and to provide us with any ideas on how we may improve further editions of this book.
