Gray: Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia (Expert Consult Series)

For years I have spent my weekend afternoons reviewing footage of ultrasound-guided regional blocks. The vast majority of this footage is not worth saving, but what remains are the highlights and lowlights of my clinical practice in striking detail.

I make no apologies for using high-quality sonograms in Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia. I feel that these images best illustrate the procedures and are easiest to learn from. Although the sonograms may not reflect all types of clinical imaging used today, imaging will continue to improve, and in the future, even more structural details will be evident. Good imaging is something to strive for because good imaging allows procedures to be safe and effective.

The images are intended to give the reader a specific idea of what to look for during regional anesthesia procedures and should prove helpful for people with a wide variety of backgrounds and clinical skills. Enough information is provided to enable the reader to understand and interpret the clinical ultrasound imaging of normal anatomy and its common variations. Limitations and artifacts also are discussed.

Special thanks to Drs. Robin Stackhouse and Susan Yoo who worked on recording the external photographs and Drs. Holger Baumann and Xiaokui Ma for providing some of the high-quality images. I also would like to thank the anesthesia workroom technical staff and Serafin Estrada at San Francisco General Hospital who helped me work on this project.
