Rosen's Breast Pathology 3rd Edition

This third edition of Rosen's Breast Pathology is designed to build upon and enhance the two preceding volumes. A substantial number of images have been added, a few images have been replaced, and attention has been given to improving the color balance of retained images. New and updated information is provided on the use of immunohistochemistry and molecular studies in the diagnosis of breast lesions. The advantages and limitations of needle core biopsy sampling are emphasized throughout the text. The discussion of sentinel lymph node mapping has been greatly expanded to address pathologic and clinical controversies associated with this procedure. The topic of basal-like carcinoma is a new subject in this volume.
The addition of new information, references, and illustrations made it necessary to omit selected references and text that appeared in the second edition in order to keep the book to a manageable size. As a consequence, the number of chapters has been reduced from 46 to 44, and all chapters after chapter 10 have been renumbered, as have the corresponding illustrations.
One casualty of this process was the chapter titled “In situ (Intraepithelial) Carcinoma: An Overview.” The reader interested in a discussion of the concept of in situ carcinoma in the breast should see Chapter 11 in the second edition. The other chapter omitted was titled “Staging of Breast Carcinoma.” One year after the second edition was published, the breast carcinoma staging protocol was revised and expanded, especially in the area of ancillary explanatory text, to a degree that it became too unwieldy to include it in the third edition of Rosen's Breast Pathology. Some of this material has been incorporated into Chapter 44 of this volume, particularly with respect to sentinel lymph node mapping. However, readers seeking the current edition of the breast carcinoma staging system are referred to complementary documents published by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), the American Joint Cancer Commission (AJCC), and a discussion of the 2002 staging system by Singletary et al.
An illustrated, historical review of in situ breast carcinoma, as described in publications since the mid-19th century, can be found in Chapter 11 of the first edition.
This edition has been thoroughly reviewed, rewritten, and edited by the author, and it has been subjected to rigorous scrutiny by the publisher's excellent staff throughout various stages of the production process. The choice of illustrations and references, the selection of data to be cited, and the conclusions expressed reflect the author's experience and opinions.
