From the beginning, it was our idea to create a book that covers a variety of medical conditions that the average internist/family practitioner, physiatrist, orthopedist, rheumatologist, and neurologist encounters in his or her medical practice. We particularly wanted to emphasize the outpatient aspects of both musculoskeletal injuries and chronic medical conditions requiring rehabilitation from the perspective of a practitioner in an ambulatory setting. In this new edition, we have added an entirely new section on the ambulatory management of pain conditions.
Essentials of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation covers many diagnoses in a deliberately succinct and specific format. This book is now divided into three sections. The first section contains chapters on specific musculoskeletal diagnoses, organized anatomically. The second section describes the management of pain conditions. The third section covers common medical conditions that are typically chronic and benefit from rehabilitative as well as other interventions. Although some of these conditions require hospitalization, we have tried to focus on the rehabilitation that takes place in an ambulatory setting. Each chapter includes the same sections in the same order (Synonyms, ICD-9 Codes, Definition, Symptoms, Physical Examination, Functional Limitations, Diagnostic Studies, Differential Diagnosis, Treatment [Initial, Rehabilitation, Procedures, and Surgery], Potential Disease Complications, Potential Treatment Complications, and References). It is our hope that physicians in all specialties and allied health care providers will find that this book complements the excellent existing rehabilitation textbooks and that it will be an efficient and useful tool in the office setting.
