It feels incredible to see the fifth edition of Adolescent Health Care: A Practical Guide come to life. A once small project to help with my instruction of residents and adolescent medicine fellows has turned into a comprehensive but practical text whose “life†has now spanned almost a quarter of a century through its five editions. It has been a joy to see the continued development of adolescent health care as an exciting multidisciplinary field and see the increasing interest in this age group among so many different groups in health care. I have continued to be extremely gratified that the text remains so highly utilized among individuals at all levels of training and by so many different disciplines. One of the most satisfying aspects of my professional career has been the continued positive feedback I have received from you about the usefulness and practicality of the book for clinical, teaching, and study purposes. I continue to love seeing heavily worn copies of this book in offices and clinics.
Adolescent health care continues to expand as a field and includes pediatricians, internists, family medicine physicians, gynecologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, social workers, nurses, health educators, nutritionists, and teachers, among many others. The field has grown to include the health issues among college students, young adults with chronic illnesses transitioning into adult health care systems, adolescents in a variety of institutional settings, and adolescents served in school-based clinics. I thank all of you who are the providers of care to this population. I am always amazed and uplifted by the number of wonderful individuals from so many disciplines involved in the care of youth.
It is at times a daunting task to approach a new edition of this text with the increasing volume of information that continues to change at an ever-rapid rate. To facilitate a wider range of expertise and to broaden the approach, I have added associate editors. Dr. Debra Katzman, Dr. Catherine M. Gordon, Dr. David Rosen, and Dr. Elizabeth Woods are among the most respected names in the field of adolescent health care in North America. They provide a wide range of expertise ranging from gynecology, endocrinology, mental health issues, and prevention health issues to substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases. They have been an invaluable addition in continuing to raise the standards of this textbook. In addition to these four associate editors, new experts have been added to almost every chapter. I sincerely thank the many contributors who have helped make this fifth edition, which I consider the most complete and the most user- and Web-friendly edition yet.
With the many requests, it is always difficult to decide what special new topics to add to a new edition. Several topics came to the forefront that were important to either add, expand upon, or reorganize. These include the addition of a chapter on anxiety disorders, the total reorganization of the substance abuse chapters, the addition of material on complementary medicine, and the reorganization and expansion of material on HPV and cervical cytology. All other material has been extensively revised to include new information, research, and recommendations as well as new references and Web sites. Web sites, both in the text and in the reference section, have also been expanded to access up-to-date information where relevant. Web sites that are appropriate for teenagers, parents, and professionals have also been included.
I hope that all readers will enjoy this latest edition of Adolescent Health Care. Particularly for new readers, the intent is to make the material practical and easy to read, while maintaining a thorough approach that is evidence based but in a concise format. I know that the many tables, figures, statistics, references, and resources will help you in providing care to the many adolescents and young adults that you serve. The appendices cover a wide range of books, magazines, articles, organizations, and Web sites available for this age-group. As always, the hope is to make it easier for you, the reader, to perform appropriate evaluations and work-ups.
